Acing Alzheimer's with ACE Inhibitors

A small but very provocative and exciting clinical trial has been done in Alzheimer's disease. The trial was based on the novel idea that there is an alteration in ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) in Alzheimer's disease. And the results look remarkable.

Although these results are very encouraging it is important to keep in mind some important limitations of this study. Most importantly is the fact that both doctors and patients knew which medications they were receiving (i.e. the study was not blinded). This opens up the study to potential biases on the part of the investigators and others that might have affected the results. Secondly, the mental exam scores observed in the group taking the drugs not expected to have an effect showed declines much higher than are usual in a study of this type which may have then overly favored the active drug group. Whether the type of mental exam performed in this study is truly an accurate measure of the neurological degeneration seen in Alzheimer’s patients was also called into question.
